*NEWS* -- my new EP, Sweet Is The Lore Pt. 2, is now out in the world! you can listen on all streaming platforms or grab a free download on bandcamp.
i’ve released two full-length albums and three EPs of mostly acoustic, singer-songwriter music under my given name. all of it is available to listen wherever you prefer to get your music:

i write music first and foremost from a place of emotionally honest experience, exploring themes of love, loss, getting older, and generally what it means to be human at this moment in history. for the past four projects (Sweet Is The Lore Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, Foxes, Heights | Lines), i recorded and mixed everything in my home studio -- a definite labor of love, but an awesome way to develop my process beyond just writing and playing and to integrate more of myself into the music and more music into myself.
i’ve never been a touring artist, but i used to play live shows, mostly small ones in washington dc, where i lived for 15 years before moving to nyc. these days, i don’t play live much, but i do play often for my wife and our dog :).

rilles
rille /ril,ˈrilə/ -- noun (astronomy): a fissure or narrow channel on the moon’s surface.
rilles is the name under which i release alternative electronic music at the intersection of downtempo, dream pop, ambient, and trip-hop. i work with analog and digital instruments and production techniques -- think synthesizers and tape loops, along with guitars, cello, and whatever i can make happen in ableton live -- and aim to create left-of-center electronic music that opens new worlds. i’m always working on learning something new (currently the elektron syntakt and my small eurorack setup), and i love when “mistakes” find their way into finished songs.
i’ve always been interested in space (hence the adopted name for this project), and my first project, Satellite Bird, is something of a concept album that tells the story of a first-time astronaut’s journey in space. take a listen here:

miscellaneous
i hope to have more work (in different mediums even!) to share here in the future. for now, i’m using this miscellaneous section to gather my thoughts on a number of topics, chief among them why i make art. it’s not quite a manifesto, but i do enjoy the idea of building a manifesto over time, so maybe this is the start of that kind of thing.
on making music
in the past, i’ve written that perhaps my most indulgent wish as an artist and songwriter is that you (the listener) turn music into immersive theater, that you let it change the colors and textures of the world around you, that you imbue it with your own meaning even as you seek mine. i acknowledge this is perhaps a lot to ask of a listener, but this is how i engage with music in my own life, so it’s not coming from nowhere :).
blog
a preface: years and years ago, i used to keep a regular blog that occasionally entertained my closest friends. these days, i am trying to revive my old blogging habit, less as a form of providing useful information and more as an informal record of what i’m doing. full disclosure, i haven’t yet figured out the scope of what i will be writing about. the blog likely includes music and creative process-related musings, but may also include stuff that seems out of left field. i suppose that’s a side effect of what happens when we bring our whole selves to the table. so, if you’re still interested, here it is:
